✓ y ) The State Port Pilot, Southport, North Carolina, Wednesday, September 14,1994-131 It s great to win one’ Maturing line> Morris win praise from Force By George Cox Sports Editor A young line maturing in the season’s third game al lowing a premier runningback, O. J. Morris, to slice through enemy territory for a 203-yard night, was the main reason South Brunswick’s football Cougars picked up their first win of the 1994 grid campaign Fri day mght at Camp Lejeune. 6 And when the dust had settled, a 41-14 victory made aU of the pre-season practice sessions under first-year coach Derrell Force seem worthwhile. The Cougar offense, including Morris and backfield mate Izesta Brown, quarterbacks Jeremy Baker and Adam Kaufhold and receiver Johnny Scott, drew praise from Force, who first issued lots of accolades for the South Brunswick offensive line. The players were as glad as Force to grab the sea son s first win and get that proverbial monkey off their coach s back. "I’m glad we finally won a game," Baker said. "The tonighT b,0Cking 3 lot better- The>' worked hard So did the entire squad. "O. J. is getting cranked up," Force noted. "The of fensive line gave him some holes to run through. If he gets a crack, he can go." The Cougar mentor was relieved to win. Yes sir, it’s great to win one," he said. "(Camp Lejeune) played hard and did some things (in the pass ing game) to hurt us, but we were closer to them this time than we had been. Their kids made some good catches but our kids are getting better." Continuing to evaluate the game, Force said, "We still had a few breakdowns (on the line) — penetration a few times. We brought 34 kids and 34 got to play. We brought six kids from the junior varsity and they got to play some. The thing I saw tonight that we hadn’t been getting was senior leadership. Will Rabon gave us some tonight and so did O. J. And Izesta Brown stepped for ward some tonight and played like I thought he was capable of playing offensively and defensively. Force moved Brown from linebacker to the secondary to help the young freshmen get acclimated *••• our kids needed a good ball game to get more belief. Tonight, we scored 41 points. Now they9re going to believe a little bit more.9 Derrell Force South Brunswick coach to varsity action. He came up with an interception in the second half after the Devil Pups had experienced a lot of success in the air. We keep making big plays but keep giving them up," Force continued. "(Brown) made a great intercep tion tonight. He came flying over, reached out and tucked it in with one hand — a great interception.” Talking about Baker’s 58-yard, fly-pattem bomb down the right sideline to receiver Johnny Scott -- a key play in the third quarter — Force acknowledged that his offense had set up the play on a previous pos session. When South Brunswick regained control, the Cougar coach called for the play immediately from the sidelines. "Jeremy Baker made a great throw and Johnny Scott made a great catch," Force elaborated. "I thought he was going to score but their kid had a great angle on him. Johnny Scott is the fastest kid on our team. He can run." Force was glad that the pressure of winning that first game was finally off the players’ shoulders. "The first one takes a little load off your shoulders. The kids needed it more than I did. I have a lot of con fidence in what we are trying to do with our coaching staff, and our kids needed a good ball game to get more belief. Tonight, we scored 41 points. Now they’re going to believe a little bit more.” Jamboree kicks in $27,219 to schools The 1994 UCB Football Jamboree was the most successful in the event’s eight-year history.
